Finding My Voice Through the Voices in Literature Conference

I’m quiet. I rarely use my voice, yet this year I decided to join a conference focused on “The Power of Voice.” Every year, Westridge’s Perspectives in Literature class hosts its own student-led conference called Voices in Literature and Culture. This year, the main focus of the class was to examine the voices of female African-Americans. However, the conference topic was expanded to include all voices in the theme “The Power of Voice.”

Welcome to Upper School Night: Joining the Old and New

On a May 1, Wednesday night, students gathered in Braun for the Welcome to Upper School night. Current eighth graders and incoming ninth graders joined together in a big melting pot of old and new.

​

The glittering disco ball that hung from the ceiling reflected light off the amber wood spreading across Braun’s floor. The atmosphere in Braun felt slightly squashed, as the eighth grade’s class size was nearly doubling with the new mass of students arriving.

Dress Code Needing Clarity

Most students wake up in the morning and have a clear vision of what to wear for the school day. The basics consist of khaki pants or skirt and a white shirt. Then come layers, maybe a sweater or jacket. For some students, this is where the dress code can become murky. Is this shade of green the right shade? Is this logo too big? Should I take my chances and risk it?

Waterfall Festival

Exceeds Expectations

Tables piled high with succulents, jewelry, and sweet treats of any kind line the walkway to Commons at this year’s Waterfall Festival. The middle school club, the Water Warriors hosted the Waterfall Festival on November 8 in order to raise awareness of the global water crisis.  Sponsored by Middle School history teacher, Ms. Bizar, the Water Warriors raise money to build clean water wells in schools in Africa. This year, the Water Warriors plan to build three wells in Ugandan schools which teach mostly South Sudanese refugees.

Seventh Grade Power of One Project Promotes Empowerment

The Papa Gooch band made its long-awaited reappearance on October 26, 2018. The original song, “Papa Gooch,” was performed alongside “I Found A Camel in Your Ear,” a newly released song. Special guest Sophia L. ’23 also danced to “Black Suit” by Super Junior and “DNA” by BTS.

Westridge encourages and empowers young women and girls to make a difference. Westridge’s motto, “Lives of impact begin here” encompasses this ideal. Years ago, the seventh grade cultural studies team, Mr. Cross and Ms. Bizar introduced the Power of One, a project that encourages students to put the school’s motto into action.

Eighth Grade Retreats to Encourage Bonding

There was enthusiastic chatter amongst the eighth graders. The excited buzz running throughout Mudd was obvious, as the students were eager to begin the first day of their retreat and find out what the advisors had in store for them.

Middle School Student Voices Shows Tiger Courage

The shriek of the mic echoed through the PAC when Megan B. ’23 and Sofia M.’23,  members of the Middle School Student Voices, presented a slideshow on bullying to the entire school.

 

Although Megan and Sofia were excited and anxious about their presentation, they showed their true tiger courage and presented with confidence.

Inspired by the popular and proactive Water Warriors, Keaton L. ‘24 and Lily Blue S. ’24 have decided to no longer be bystanders and create a club based off a trending world issue: homelessness.

Stress, Mess, & Management

It’s no secret that stress can get the best of students’ days. Whether in lower school, middle school, or upper school, students have to manage their time between homework, chores, and after-school activities. New transitions to new classes, new teachers, and even a new school can add anxiety and stress to the load.

The deafening shriek of Mr. Koch’s silver whistle captured our attention and ignited nervous excitement for the A-Team Volleyball Game against an undefeated Clairbourn. Unfortunately, the Westridge Tigers were conquered by the Clairbourn A-Team. Even though both A and B Teams have lost the last week of September’s games, they competed with tiger pride.
