School Shootings in Private and Public Schools

On November 14, 2019, a sixteen-year-old boy named Nathaniel Berhow entered his school and shot others with a 0.45-caliber handgun, killing two students and injuring three others before turning the gun on himself. The shooting took place at Saugus High School in Santa Clarita, a mere 40 miles away from Westridge. The latest shooting adds to the growing list of attacks on school campuses, with as many as 45 shootings taking place at elementary and high schools this year alone.

Students Rethink Testing after ACT Announces Changes

On Tuesday, October 8, ACT officials announced two new changes to the ACT. Beginning in September 2020, students will have the ability to retake certain sections of the college admissions exam. Students will also be able to take the exam online. The ACT’s partial retake option will provide a new and exciting option for students; the SAT, the only alternative standardized test, does not offer partial retakes. The new policy has raised questions amongst students across the nation and at Westridge.

Just three months after our National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) trip to Alaska, I’ve already been in school for a month and played countless hours of tennis, but I am also still reliving the most fulfilling and insightful trip I’ve ever been on. Writing this feels a bit like capping off a journey I am not ready to complete.

There was a buzz around campus on the morning of September 20th. As students across the world walked out of class to participate in the Global Climate Strike, Westridge High Schoolers were mobilizing to do the same. Armed with signs that read “the teens are angry” and “there is no planet B,” Westridge students caught the Gold Line to Downtown Los Angeles to take part in the historic day.
