Dig Pink Game Scores Double Win Against Chadwick

Amid the ribbon-covered walls, bright magenta jerseys, and the spirited shouting from the bleachers, Varsity, Junior Varsity, and Freshman Volleyball played hard for wins against Chadwick in the annual Dig Pink volleyball game. 

 

Every year, Westridge, along with other schools and colleges across the country, play volleyball games to raise awareness for metastatic breast cancer. Through the Side-Out Foundation, Westridge raised $576 this year, exceeding the initial $500 goal. 

 

Melanie Horn, Head of Westridge Athletics, was overjoyed with the result. “It’s a way for volleyball to give back to the community, specifically to cancer survivors and beyond to hopefully help people become survivors,” she shared. Along with the money raised, the event is always a thrill for the players and the fans. 

 

On the day of the event, students sported pink outfits and a food truck is provided during the game. Supporters in the stands cheered enthusiastically and stomped loudly as the teams rose to victory. Both the JV and varsity teams won their games, with JV beating Chadwick 3-1 and Varsity 3-0 (25-16, 25-15, 25-13). 

 

Horn’s response was beyond positive: “It was epic! It was really good; I was thrilled with both JV and Varsity for having great games. It’s always nice to win the Dig Pink game and especially to beat Chadwick.” 

 

The players were also elated, especially because the win was crucial for continuation to CIF (California Interscholastic Federation). Julia C. ’20, libero for Varsity, described the pressure on the court. “Our Dig Pink game … was nerve-wracking. Both because it was a monumental game and because it was a Dig Pink game, but also because we needed to win to get to CIF.” 

 

Despite this pressure, players fought hard. Hitters Gracie N. ’23 and Krystal R. ’20 were relentless, spiking numerous unpassable balls and keeping fans riveted throughout the lively three-set match. 

 

Varsity’s season continued into CIF where they battled with Los Altos in CIF-SS Division IV playoffs, beating them in three. Although their season ended with a loss to Valley Christian, the team’s overall experience on and off the court ended with a high, one of which was making some lifelong friends along the way. 

 

“It was such an amazing experience to be a part of, and to be a part of a team who validated me and understood that I was still learning, [which] was something I will never forget. I have made what [are] hopefully lifelong friends with this team and I really wish all of the seniors the best in college,” said Davan D. ’21.
